Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (PVC-u) is one of the most widely used thermoplastic materials for pipe installations. Being odourless and tasteless it is suitable for conveying potable water and many food products. PVC-u has excellent chemical resistance. The good flow characteristics are the result of the smooth bore and have good resistance to abrasion. It is light in weight, easy to join together, making PVC-u a good alternative to the more traditional materials. PVC-u is resistant to most solutions of acids, alkalis, salts and solvents that can be mixed with water. Additional information in this respect can be obtained from our Technical Department.
Polypipe Effast PVC-u is stabilised with compounds conforming to the EEC safety levels for vinyl chloride momomer (VCM) and the WRAS requirements for use with potable water.
The chemical resistance properties of PVC-u are excellent: it is resistant to most solutions of acids, alkalis and salts and to solvents that can be mixed with water. PVC-u is not resistant to aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Temperature range: 0 °C ÷ +60 °C.
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is highly rated as a thermoplastic pipework system and is used in many applications such as food and beverage processing as well as water and sewerage treatment and many other industries. ABS has good chemical resistance with high impact strength and low moisture absorption. ABS is non toxic and conforms to the toxicological requirements of the British Plastic Federation, British Industrial Biological Research Association Code of Practice for food usage 45/5. It also fulfils the EEC requirements for plastic materials in contact with foodstuffs. ABS systems are lightweight, rigid and easy to install using a solvent cement.
ABS has good resistance to most diluted inorganic acids, salts, animal fats and oils and organic acids. It is not resistant to organic solvents, alcohol, petrol, acetic acid or vegetable oils. Recommendations can be given by our Technical Department regarding the resistance of ABS to specific chemicals.
Temperature range: -40°C to +60°C.
Polypipe Effast has developed a range of polypropylene valves and fittings and will continue to increase the range of products. Polypropylene pipe work systems are widely used in industrial processing applications, because of its good characteristics.
Polypropylene offers good resistance to abrasion, good thermal properties and is suitable for working at higher temperatures than PVC-u and ABS. Polypropylene has good chemical resistance. It is resistant to acids, alkalis, salts and to a number of organic solvents. It doesn’t resist oxidizing acid with high concentration.
Temperature range: -10°C to +110°C.
RED ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is highly rated as a thermoplastic pipework system and is used for smoke detection system. RED ABS has good chemical resistance with high impact strength and low moisture absorption. RED ABS systems are lightweight, rigid and easy to install using a solvent cement.
Temperature range: -40 °C ÷ +60 °C.
PE100 is a thermoplastic material used frequently in the construction of pipes, shank fittings and long shank collars. Its main features are: impact resistance, low specific gravity, resistance to UV rays and chemical agents, complete non-toxicity and considerable resistance to abrasion and micro-organism attacks.
PE 100 has a good chemical resistance to many acids and bases but it is not able to withstand strong oxidizing acids.
Temperature range: 0 °C ÷ +40 °C.
